Emergency Food and Shelter Program |
The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) supplements and expands the work of local social service agencies to help people with economic (not disaster-related) emergencies. The EFSP began in 1983 and was created by Congress to help meet the needs of hungry and homeless people throughout the United States and its territories by allocating federal funds for the provision of food and shelter. During its 22 years of operation, the program has disbursed over $2.6 billion to over 11,500 local providers in more than 2,500 counties and cities. In San Juan County, a Local Board governs the EFSP. During fiscal year 2007-2008, over $65,000 was awarded to this area to supplement social service agencies in their work. This funding will help to provide more than 1,236 meals in mass feeding at the Daily Bread, provide nutritious food supplement through Catholic Charities and food at the Foodbank, over 5,900 nights of shelter, and over hundreds of families can be helped with rent and utility assistance. If your agency is a non-profit or governmental entity providing food and/or shelter services in the local area, you may be eligible to apply for this supplemental funding. Grant applications are accepted between October and December each year. An application form is available for download. Please contact Linda Mickey, at (505) 326-1195 for more information or visit the National Board website at www.efsp.unitedway.org.
