de Toqueville Society
Three years ago, Tommy Bolack became Founding Father of a very special society, the San Juan County Chapter of the national group known as the Alexis de Tocqueville Society. This society is a nationally recognized group of individuals who donate at least $10,000 to their local United Way.
Tommy Bolack did indeed grow our Society! In fact, under his Chairmanship, the San Juan County Alexis de Tocqueville Society quadrupled it’s membership. The local society doubled in each of the two years of his chairmanship. This year, Linda Clark was the chair for the committee and two new members were added. Our newest members have opted to remain anonymous.
The San Juan County Chapter of the de Tocqueville Society raised a total of $72,000. We appreciate all of our Alexis de Tocqueville givers and thank them for their most generous contribution to our Community.

Noted historian and French Aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville toured the young United States in 1831, observing and recording the American spirit of voluntary action for the common good, which formed the basis for his book, Democracy in America. Today, this essence of volunteerism remains alive through United Way and the society that bears his name.
The Alexis de Tocqueville Society was created to acknowledge and honor those individuals whose leadership and commitment to helping others has been uncommon in its generosity. On behalf of the thousands of lives who are touched each year by one of our member agencies, San Juan United Way is proud to thank and salute these visionary leaders for their outstanding annual support.
Three elements of democracy, which de Tocqueville so admired in American society, were liberty, equality and the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor. These same elements are embraced in the French phrase "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité." Tocqueville hoped that by achieving these elements of democracy, all people would choose to pursue freedom, knowledge and prosperity-indépendance, connaissance, and prospérité.
San Juan United Way's society was established in 2003 when Founder, Tommy Bolack presented a gift of $10,000 to San Juan United Way. The society has grown each year since its inception and now has 6 members.
