Guitar Heroes! |
In our lives, each one of us has been touched by someone - other than our parents - who broadened our horizons, made the ordinary special, and transformed us with little moments of big magic to our everyday lives. Do you remember the person who brought that light into your life? By volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters, you can do the same for a child. And you will both be forever changed in the process.
Children need
adult friends in their lives to help guide them through life’s
many obstacles. Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Juan County, has a proud history
of nurturing friendships between caring adult volunteers and children. For 25
years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has served hundreds of children in San Juan County
through mentoring programs. Mentoring is available to children between
the ages 6-15 through our local organization.
Our Mission: Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Juan County exists to help children
reach potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with
measurable impact.
Big Brothers Big Sisters offers our volunteers a variety of ways to mentor children. We
have a Community Based program, that matches children with a carefully screened
adult role model 18 years or older known as a "Big". The Big meet with
the youth at least twice a month. The pair plans their own activities. Each one-to-one
relationship is supported by a case manager responsible for supervision.
Another option is for volunteers to mentor children at participating schools on their lunch hour. Time commitment is once-a-week through the academic year. During the time spent together the two can have personal discussions, study, play games, or use the time however needed. An on-site Big Brother Big Sisters case manager oversees the program and provides on-going support. The children benefit from regular contact with a “Big” while the adult volunteers are able to give their time midday when it may be more convenient
